8/7 Expedition Reef Event at the Academy of SciencesWe hosted an event at Academy of Sciences for a screening of the fulldome film, Expedition Reef! Following the screening there was a making-of presentation, a reception with hors d'oeuvres & drinks, and a special screening of some Pixar shorts!
June6/27 Incredibles 2 Panel and ScreeningWe spent a wonderful evening at Industrial Light and Magic speaking to a panel of filmmakers who worked on Incredibles 2. The panel was followed by a screening of the short film Bao, and a screening of Incredibles 2!

The event included a pre-release screening of Incredibles 2, a reception with the filmmakers and a studio tour. It was an extremely successful event and we were able to raise money for scholarships and programs to facilitate getting female students into industry jobs!

The WIA Bay Area members in attendance donned silly hats and enjoyed an opportunity to mingle and get to know one another. Silly prizes were awarded for silly hats in the following three categories: Silliest, Most Festive, and Most “Hattitude.”
12/5 VR Panel at Industrial Light and MagicWe hosted a panel featuring some of the top women in VR in the Bay Area at Industrial Light and Magic. They spoke about some of the challenges of designing for VR, how to get funding and distribute VR projects, and showed clips of cutting-edge work.

In conjunction with Nimble Collective, Kathy was able to create this short film using cutting-edge, cloud-based technology, and a crew that had a gender split of 50/50. After viewing the film we did a Q&A with a panel of artists who worked on the film. Roadside Assistance is currently doing the festival circuit, but check out the trailer here! WIA Bay Area President, Angelique Reisch, moderated the extremely enlightening discussion. She was joined on stage by Kristen Beech, the sets modeling lead, Jude Brownbill, the animation lead and Cruz rig tester, Annee Jonjai, the sets shading lead, Laura Phillips, the shading art director, and Becki Tower, the crowds animation supervisor. After hearing about the challenges faced and the accomplishments achieved while making the film, we enjoyed a screening of Cars 3!

Her talk focused on the principles of lighting and discussed how the lighting design and color choices influence the time of day and emotion of a scene. She showed examples of how those principles were used in classic Disney 2D animated films and are still used in 3D animated productions today.

We held an informal Q&A with her moderated by Pixar Lead Animator and WIA SF Mentorship Committee Co-Chair Becki Tower. It was great hearing about her background, her work on MOANA, and her thoughts on gender diversity in the Animation Industry.
